Professor Sergio Leon-Saval

Sergio Leon-Saval is Professor of Optics and Photonics at the School of Physics in the University of Sydney. He was awarded his PhD by the University of Bath, UK, in 2006. He is Director of the Institute of Photonics and Optical Science (IPOS), and Director of the Sydney Astrophotonics Instrumentation Laboratory (SAIL).

 
 

Prof Leon-Saval is an Optica Fellow with more than 16 years of experience in the research area of photonics. He has made breakthrough contributions in the field of specialty optical fibres, Astrophotonics, and optical instrumentation systems for sensing, imaging, and communications applications.

Prof Leon-Saval brings a strong expertise and skills in leading collaborations for research translation, and he is passionate about creating a streamlined pathway for research to move quickly into real-world impact. His commitment to engaging with industry is evident by his part-time CTO and founder director roles of three startup companies in the last few years.
