The NSW Smart Sensing Network (NSSN) is proud to announce that Western Sydney University (WSU) has joined its consortium.

The addition of WSU grows the membership of the NSSN to seven universities and extends the Network’s presence into the burgeoning western Sydney region.

Home to over two million people and boasting a broad array of major infrastructure projects over the coming decade, western Sydney is a major driver of the NSW economy and is making significant contributions to innovation and prosperity in the state. Projects like the Western Sydney Aerotropolis, Western Parkland City, Central River City, Westmead and Liverpool Health precincts and the Western Sydney multiversity are generating enormous opportunity, many of which will rely heavily on next-generation sensing technology.

Whether it’s sensors that will help accurately position cube satellites in space, the sensors in automated vehicles that will help traffic flow more smoothly or chemical sensing for human health, the NSSN is partnering with industry and government to bring research in smart sensing to life. WSU will bring unique strengths to this endeavour across areas like smart cities, agtech, environmental monitoring, advanced manufacturing and space & aviation.

With six campuses spread across the greater western Sydney region, WSU is a regional powerhouse in both education and research. It boasts a strong commitment to impact-driven research and is pursuing a world-class research development program.

“As a young and innovative University, we pride ourselves on establishing strategic partnerships and connecting research excellence with practical and positive impacts for the communities we serve.” said Professor Deborah Sweeney (Research & Innovation) at WSU. “The NSSN is a natural fit for us as we seek to deliver real impact to the people of NSW and position NSW as an innovative leader in areas like smart sensing.”

NSSN Co-Directors Professor Ben Eggleton and Professor Justin Gooding issued a joint statement welcoming WSU to the Network: “We are delighted to welcome Western Sydney University to the NSSN. The western Sydney region is the next hotspot for research and innovation in our state with numerous major projects that will benefit immensely from worldclass smart sensing research. WSU’s membership of the NSSN will bring outstanding new capability to the network and strengthen our ability to position NSW as a world leader in smart sensing”.
