Science & Research Breakfast Seminar: The Cochlear Implant as a Treatment of Severe to Profound Hearing Loss

Professor Jim Patrick AO, 2021 NSW Scientist of the Year, presents ‘The Cochlear Implant as a Treatment of Severe to Profound Hearing Loss’

The cochlear implant is now recognised as the preferred treatment for severe to profound hearing loss by scientists and clinicians around the world. This is the result of extensive scientific research, technological innovation, product development and clinical evaluation over more than 50 years.

Professor Jim Patrick is Chief Scientist – Emeritus at Cochlear Limited and he will describe his journey from early research with a team led by Professor Graeme Clark at the University of Melbourne in the late 1970s to the successful evolution of commercial products by Cochlear Limited, established in 1981 and today the world leader in implantable hearing devices.

Cochlear is based in Sydney but was ‘born global’, with early connections to researchers and clinicians around the world.

Professor Jim Patrick will describe many of the challenges and highlights that he has seen during his career and will also share some thoughts of possibilities for implantable hearing devices of the future.
