Professor Benjamin Eggleton

Professor Benjamin Eggleton is the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Sydney, Co-Director of the NSW Smart Sensing Network (NSSN) and Professor in the School of Physics. As Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research), he has key responsibilities for the University's research performance and compliance functions. Eggleton's early career at Bell Labs helped shape the entrepreneurial and translational approach that has characterised his leadership in research and innovation.
Professor Eggleton joined the University of Sydney in 2003, where he was the founding Director of the Institute of Photonics and Optical Science (IPOS) and served as founding Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Ultrahigh Bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems (CUDOS) from 2003 to 2017. He was a two-time ARC Federation Fellow, an ARC Laureate Fellow. He subsequently served as Director of Sydney Nano from 2018 to 2022, the University's multidisciplinary research initiative in nanoscience and nanotechnology.
Professor Eggleton has authored or co-authored more than 550 publications, including papers in Nature Photonics, Nature Physics, Nature Communications, Physical Review Letters, and Optica, and has delivered more than 200 invited presentations worldwide. According to Google Scholar, his work has attracted more than 55,000 citations and an h-index of approximately 126.
He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science (FAA), the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (FTSE), Optica (formerly OSA), SPIE, IEEE, the Australian Institute of Physics (FAIP), and the Royal Society of New South Wales (FRSNSW). Professor Eggleton is a past President of the Australian Optical Society and served as Editor-in-Chief of APL Photonics from 2015 to 2025.
