Water Workshop: Better prediction of leaks and breaks of water mains

  • UTS TechLab 34 Lord Street Botany, NSW, 2019 Australia (map)

Following on from the successful water sandpit in May 2018, this workshop will bring together key players in the water industry with experts from NSW’s leading universities to explore sensing solutions for better prediction of leaks and breaks in water mains.

Pipe leaks and breaks are a billion dollar problem for water utilities. Finding a robust and innovative solution to this challenge is made even more critical in the context of the current drought in eastern and southern Australia. If water utilities are asking customers to conserve water, then utilities themselves must be seen to be addressing their own water loss through leaks and breaks.

The scope of this proposed project provides an opportunity for Sydney Water to consolidate its findings from the failure prediction and data analytics research over the last few years to further enhance the prediction of leaks and breaks of water mains. Verifiable knowledge will be combined with out-of-the-box thinking.

Senior representatives from Sydney Water, Hunter Water and Southeast Water will join with university experts and industry representatives to devise workable, fundable solutions.
